WMO CLIMATE REPORT

Item #d97may94

The annual climate summary of the World Meteorological Organization published April 29 calls 1996 the eighth warmest year on record since 1860, and the 18th consecutive year the world has warmed. This result, based on surface measurements on land and ocean, is consistent with earlier estimates. (See Global Climate Change Digest, NEWS, Mar. 1997.) The report also highlights various weather and climate extremes for the globe and by region.

Copies of Statement of the Status of the Global Climate in 1996 and a map of significant anomalies and events during 1995 are available from the Info. & Public Affairs Off., WMO, 41 Ave. Giuseppe-Motta, CH 1211 Geneva 2, Switz. (tel: 41 22 730 8315; fax: 41 22 733 2829; e-mail: Gorre-Dale_E@gateway.wmo.ch), or on the World Wide Web: http://www.wmo.ch/.
